The USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) is the nation’s leading federal wood utilization research laboratory,  serving the entire United States.  The FPL develops science and technology to conserve, extend, and sustainably-utilize forest resources in order to improve the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests.  The FPL is an unbiased technical authority on wood science and use.  Established in 1910, the FPL has 165 permanent employees and an annual budget of $30 million.  The FPL regularly cooperates with other government agencies, universities, and the private sector to develop and implement problem-solving technologies.  Recognizing the importance of cellulosic nanomaterials, the FPL has established a common government/industry R&D agenda to develop the precompetitive science and technology needed to enable the commercial production and use of cellulosic nanomaterials in many applications.
